Heart of the matter - the ice is melting

Results from Dr. Sebastian Mernild

The globe is changing. The globe has always changed but within limets that allows the ecosystem to recover from the changes.

But over the past 10 years changes are occuring faster than usual and that change cannot be balanced by the ecosystem.

The temperatures are rising in the Arctic region. My measurements around Greenland shows the exact rise in temperatures over a 10 year period of time. The amount of water that used to freeze in the winter is becoming dramatically smaller. The density of the melted water changes the bottom currents and can result in a new ice age.

The changes also creates problems for animals, who are dependent on the ice and the Arctic ecosystem.

Dr. Sebastian Mernild is a Danish scientist (Ph.D.) working with climate
change, the effect of climate change, and with snow, glacier, and runoff
modeling of the Arctic region.

The passion for ‘the effect of climate change in the arctic region’ began
during his Ph.D. study (2003-2006) at University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Since January 2007 Dr. Mernild has been employed at the International
Arctic Research Center and at the Water Environmental Research Center,
University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), USA.

At UAF Dr. Mernild works together with the world leading researchers in
climatology, glaciology, and hydrology of polar regions.

Present research projects are to understand the effect on climate change
now and in the future on: the Greenland Ice Sheet, local glaciers in
Greenland and Alaska, Arctic snow distribution, and Arctic freshwater
runoff from the land area to the ocean in light of global sea level
change.

Dr. Mernild can be contacted on: fxsm@uaf.edu or sm@geogr.ku.dk
